Development of Millimeter-Wave Sensing Technology Enabling Both Privacy-Preserving and Multi-Person Simultaneous Monitoring

The severe personnel shortage in an aging society poses a major challenge for society as a whole. Millimeter-wave sensors have traditionally been anticipated as a technology enabling monitoring while ensuring privacy, but high costs have hindered their adoption. To address this issue, we developed technologies capable of estimating the postures of multiple people and simultaneously estimating the vital signs of multiple people using a single sensor. This has achieved both the cost reduction of multi-person simultaneous monitoring systems, which was conventionally difficult, and the protection of privacy. Demonstrations at medical sites confirmed the effectiveness of fall detection and multi-person measurement. Furthermore, demonstrations are underway in municipal housing, nursing homes, and overseas. These technologies are expected to remove the barriers to introducing millimeter-wave sensors and allow the technology to spread to areas where monitoring was previously difficult. |
