Empowering Proactive Behavioral Transformation with Self-Mirroring Twins

Prior AI agent systems for behavior change have largely interacted with users as external others—for example, in the role of a coach or counselor that offers advice or conducts dialogue. In contrast, we propose Self Mirroring Twins (SeMT), a mirror‑like digital agent that blends self‑like and other‑like elements. SeMT aims to support agentic behavior change grounded in intrinsic motivation. It sometimes acts as a counter‑model by deliberately exhibiting small, safe failures to elicit user insight and self‑coaching; at other times it demonstrates ideal actions, temporarily adopting the role of a motivational leader. This paper focuses on Virtual SeMT, which presents actions within virtual environments, and outlines the directions of research in VR psychology needed to advance SeMT—specifically, how action presentation should be designed, manipulated, and evaluated in immersive settings to realize this concept. |
