Does Perceived Spatial Extension via Amodal Completion Have Little Influence on Visually Induced Motion Sickness?

Virtual reality (VR) sickness severity is known to depend on stimulus size, similar to vection. While vection is affected by subjective size, its effect on VR sickness is unclear. Using an HMD, we tested whether this applies to VR sickness via a search-and-count task where participants reported discomfort every minute. The results showed no increase in discomfort under the subjectively expanded stimulus size condition. Therefore, subjective size may not influence VR sickness severity. Based on these findings, proper placement of obstructions could be a useful method to reduce the severity of VR sickness without impairing self-motion perception. |
