We investigated whether a higher frame rate improve the computer’s performance. We used a shooting game that needs fast and accurate control. At 120 fps, performance was better than at 60 fps. This result shows that a 120 fps display is effective. However, when the frame rate was higher than 120 fps, the score did not improve. Hit accuracy became lower. We thought it was because the feel and movement of the mouse were not the same. To study this problem, we used a simple task. In this task, the user follows a circular target with a mouse cursor. Tracking accuracy at 60 fps was better than at 30 fps. At 120 fps, it became even better. But above 120 fps, the accuracy became worse. These results indicate that the frame rate is effective up to a maximum of 120 fps. When the frame rate exceeds 120 fps, the responsiveness of the mouse may deteriorate. This shows that simply increasing the frame rate does not improve performance. |
