Even healthy individuals sometimes cannot hear conversations in noisy environments. It was thought that this is because one cannot determine the direction of a sound source with hearing alone. To investigate this, a small light bulb was turned on at the speaker's position in a noisy environment, presenting the sound source location, and an experiment was conducted to evaluate word recognition depending on the presence or absence of visual stimuli and the direction of the presentation. As a result, word recognition in the direction where the light was on and in directions different from the light was compared, and the latter showed a higher correct response rate. From this, it was initially expected that directly presenting the sound source location would improve hearing in noisy environments, but it was observed that a slight difference in angle between the sound source direction and the visual presentation direction tends to enhance the effect of visual assistance on hearing. |
