The relationship between attention and inter-areal phase differences in alpha oscillations

Inter-areal communication is known to play a significant role in attention, and it has been hypothesized that such communication is regulated by inter-areal phase differences in alpha oscillations (Quax et al., 2017).
To evaluate this hypothesis, we analyzed two open-access EEG (electroencephalogram) datasets recorded during attention tasks and investigated whether inter-areal phase differences are modulated by attention.
EEG channel pairs were defined as combinations of two channels in the occipital-to-parietal areas, and phase differences between channels were calculated.
Phase differences were compared between attended and unattended conditions, and more than one-third of the channel pairs showed significant modulation in both datasets.
We also investigated the relationship between modulations of phase differences and modulations of amplitude. In one dataset, we observed a tendency toward a positive correlation between them.
These results partially support the hypothesis proposed by Quax et al. (2017) and suggest that inter-areal phase differences in alpha oscillations are modulated by attention. |
