The Influence of Holistic Processing and Gaze Location on the Perception of Facial Skin Brightness

Perceived facial skin brightness is illusorily modulated by facial features such as the eyes and lips. The present study examined the roles of holistic processing and fixation position in this illusion by comparing upright and inverted faces. The results showed that the illusory effect was preserved even under face inversion and enforced fixation conditions. These results suggest that the mechanism of facial skin brightness perception does not rely solely on face-specific holistic processing, but can also be induced by local visual information processing. These findings demonstrate the importance of physical gaze position during observation in elucidating the perceptual mechanisms of facial skin, while also suggesting that facial skin brightness is influenced by relatively low-level factors. |
