This study aimed to establish a systematic instructional approach for improving volleyball digging by comparing experienced players and novices and identifying a visual search strategy specific to anticipating spike direction. Video stimuli combining three defensive viewpoints and three spike trajectories were presented on a head mounted display. Seven experienced players and seven novices indicated the predicted direction as soon as they could anticipate the spike. For both groups, accuracy before ball contact did not exceed chance, and gaze analyses showed no consistent anticipation specific visual search pattern. The findings suggest that prior learning of spiker kinematics is required. |
