This study examined how avatar shape (hand/box) and somatosensory-motor information influence motion direction perception in hand peripersonal space using Virtual Reality. In Experiment 1 (high contrast), approaching bias was observed only with box avatars. In Experiment 2 (low contrast), box avatars yielded significantly lower discrimination thresholds, revealing visual reference effects under reduced visual reliability. Judgment bias was observed across all box avatar conditions in Experiment 1, but only when both box avatar and somatosensory information were present in Experiment 2. These findings suggest that motion direction perception in hand peripersonal space emerges from interactions among visual reliability, reference structures, and bodily information, with somatosensory contributions modulated by visual quality. |
