This study aimed to establish a technique for quantitatively evaluating fluctuations in arousal levels. We conducted an experiment to induce reduced arousal while maintaining fixation and analyzed the dynamic character-istics of microsaccades (MS) derived from the measured fixational eye movements. We analyzed MS amplitude, peak velocity, and frequency using data obtained immediately prior to Slow Eye Movements (SEM), which occur at sleep onset. The results revealed that during the 60 s preceding the onset of the SEM, the MS peak velocity decreased compared to that during the maintained alert state. Furthermore, immediately before SEM, inter-saccadic intervals shortened, and fluctuations in fixational eye movements increased, showing enhanced power in the 0.25–3.0 Hz fre-quency band. These findings indicate that the dynamic characteristics of MS and fluctuation components of fixational eye movements are effective objective indices for evaluating arousal levels. |
