Effects of Supernumerary Limb Embodiment on the Allocation of Attentional Resources

Attentional resources are limited, and it is known that visual stimuli of hands induce attention. This study
focused on the increase in hand visual stimuli when supernumerary hands are added as an extended body, and examined the
effects of supernumerary hands on attentional resource allocation. Participants performed a detection task while four arms were
presented in a VR space, and attention induced by their own body and the extended body was compared using reaction time as
an index. The results showed a significant difference in reaction time between the own body and the extended body, despite
using the same hand visual stimuli for both. These findings suggest that attentional resource allocation is influenced by factors
other than visual stimuli. |
