Investigating the Potential of Vision-Language Models in Cross-View Geo-Localization

Cross-view geo-localization is a technique that estimates the location at which a ground image was captured by retrieving the corresponding satellite image from a geo-referenced satellite image database. However, the task is inherently challenging not only due to the significant viewpoint differences between ground and satellite images, but also because of the limited field of view (FoV) of ground images, which often results in reduced localization accuracy. In this paper, we investigate the potential of Vision-Language Models (VLMs) for cross-view geo-localization. As an initial step, we evaluate VLMs using a pairwise comparison setting with ground images of FoV 70°, where the model selects the correct satellite image from a pair consisting of one positive and one negative candidate. |
