Automated Analysis of Driver Gaze and Pedal Operation Behavior Using Semantic Segmentation

(in English) Since approximately 90% of traffic accidents stem from driver human error, focusing on driver characteristics is important for accident prevention. Driving consists of a continuous process of perception, judgment, and operation. Within this process, appropriate scanning behavior for checking safety and speed control are key factors for mitigating accident risks. Therefore, evaluating these behaviors requires analysis of the interrelationship between gaze behavior and pedal operation. Conventional eye cameras only measure gaze coordinates without any information for identifying the specific objects being viewed. Foot placements change for preparing near future pedal operation is essential for pedal operation analysis, CAN data only measures pedal stroke as a result of pedal operation behavior and misses this preparatory phase. Although video analysis is indispensable for capturing such detailed behaviors, manual annotation incurs high costs and remains a major bottleneck. To address this issue, this study proposes an integrated automated analysis platform using the deep learning models Grounded SAM 2 and OneFormer. The system identifies viewed objects and pedal operation using gaze data and pedal videos. Verification using real-world driving data from 10 subjects achieved 90.36% accuracy for forward gaze recognition and 81.96% for pedal operation classification.
