A Note on Re-ranking using Edited Image Query for Composed Image Retrieval

Composed image retrieval (CIR) enables users to use both a visual and a textual query to retrieve an image, and thus can flexibly reflect the users' intentions.
Many approaches extract the main components of the visual query and refine them into concepts in the textual representation space. Although these approaches are effective in improving the benchmark accuracy by simplifying the visual query with complex contexts, there is an inevitable loss of visual details. Under this condition, such a retrieval system may not meet the query request when users want to find images containing more original visual query cues. Therefore, exploring methods that can appropriately utilize original visual query features without destabilizing the retrieval is desirable. In this paper, we propose a reranking method for CIR using edited images to improve the initial retrieval results. By introducing edited images that reflect the intended modifications while retaining visual details of the original query, the reranking process can complement the initial retrieval results with additional visual information. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively improve retrieval performance when used as an auxiliary reranking signal |
