Area Light Source Parameter Estimation for Penumbra Representation in AR

To achieve optical consistency in Augmented Reality (AR), it is necessary to accurately estimate the real-world light source environment and reflect it in the virtual environment. This paper aims to propose a method for estimating the direction, intensity, color temperature, and size of an area light source from a single RGB image, enabling more accurate representation of the brightness, color, and penumbra of cast shadows for virtual objects. We create a synthetic image dataset and train deep neural networks with the dataset to estimate each parameter of the area light sources. Experimental results with real-world images showed that a model with Swin Transformer V2 T as the backbone and a camera coordinate system vector as the light source direction representation could generate AR images with minimal discomfort. |
