Construction of a Gaze-Directed Wide-Area Stereoscopic Projection System Using Consumer-Grade Projectors

Introducing binocular stereopsis into wide-area projection environments typically requires expensive dedicated synchronization hardware or polarization systems that double the number of projectors. We propose a gaze-directed stereoscopic presentation method exploiting the reduced stereoscopic acuity of peripheral vision. Binocular disparity images are presented only in the gaze direction, while peripheral areas receive monoscopic images. A virtual synchronization technique called Guard Frame inserts black frames between left- and right-eye images, enabling frame-sequential stereoscopy with consumer-grade projectors. A preliminary experiment confirmed that disparity presentation over 60 degrees provides comfortable viewing. We constructed an eight-projector system and verified gaze-point tracking with dynamic switching of presentation modes. |
