An Examination of Weight Illusion from a "1st+3rd" Person Perspective: Integrating the Strengths of the 1st and 3rd Person Perspectives

In VR, the Proteus effect has been shown to influence human perception. For example, using an avatar that gives a strong impression may cause objects to be perceived as lighter. In addition, a high sense of body ownership and direct visibility of the avatar, which are related to the 1st person and 3rd person perspectives respectively, may enhance the impression of the avatar’s strength. To obtain a greater weight illusion, we have previously proposed the “1st+3rd” person perspective, which combines the advantages of the 1st person and 3rd person perspectives. In this paper, we examine changes in perceived weight with respect to the actual weight of objects and discuss the influence of the avatar’s strength in each perspective on the weight illusion. |
