In this paper, we propose an interactive musical instrument, “Nui-Mochies,” which represents the feelings of plush toys as sound. In this work, we regard plush toys as beings imbued with life: the ways they are played with and touched differ depending on their owners, and these experiences are retained as memories unique to each individual toy. We assume that such memories give rise to each plush toy’s personality and preferences, so that even when stroked in the same way, different toys may experience different feelings. We express these feelings through the behavior of sound. In addition, when multiple people experience the system simultaneously, the sounds of multiple plush toys overlap, giving rise to a session performed using plush toys. Furthermore, when plush toys hold hands with each other, a transmission of memories occurs: their respective sound behaviors are temporarily exchanged. Using the changes after the exchange as clues, participants can imagine how the other person has interacted with their plush toy in the past. Through mechanisms that enable users to listen to a plush toy’s feelings, to engage in sessions using those feelings, and to transmit memories by holding hands, this work aims to create an experience in which participants connect with plush toys—and, through plush toys, connect with each other—within a “human–plush toy–plush toy–human” relationship. |
