Botanical Gaze

Plants are also living things and are always in motion, but their movements are so gradual that it is difficult for humans to recognize them in real time. In this research, by mechanically reconstructing these plant phenomena, we created an interactive work called ``Botanical Gaze'' that allows users to visualize and experience the unique properties of plants in real time. Botanical Gaze is an artificial flower that recreates the natural phenomenon of "phototropism," in which plants grow in response to light, by replacing it with interaction with humans. By imitating the mechanism of phototropism, facial recognition technology detects the viewer's face, and the flower tilts in that direction, providing an experience as if the flower is staring back at the viewer. By using technology to visualize and experience the movements of plants, we aim to encourage a renewed appreciation for the natural workings of nature and create new sensory experiences. In this work, we use MediaPipe and Arduino UNO to mechanically reproduce the mechanism of phototropism by controlling a servo motor with a rack-and-pinion mechanism. |
