Perceptual Evaluation of Vertical Movement Sensation Induced by Sound in a Multi-Speaker Spatial Audio Environment

This study conducted impression evaluations on the relationship between the sense of movement involving elevation direction and sound in game scenes characterized by three-dimensional movement, such as those seen in ‘GRAVITY DAZE’ and ‘Portal’, within a 7.1.4ch spatial audio environment. Using Unity and Wwise, scenes featuring a parachute descent and wind noise were created as experimental stimuli. Seventeen students participated. The effects of upward-angled sound presentation on spatial cognition and immersion were verified using a 7-point Likert-scale questionnaire and behavioural observations during gameplay. Differences in sound configuration conditions were analyzed using Student's t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, depending on whether the data were normally distributed. Significant differences in the perception of movement sensation and changes in body posture were confirmed between stimuli that varied sound source placement, sound image movement direction, and, particularly, listener posture angle and vertical direction of change. |
