Evaluating Learning Motivation in a Cantonese Learning VR Game Using Conversational AI and Dialogue Scripts

We developed a Cantonese Learning VR game designed for Japanese beginners. Our system aims not only to support the acquisition of Cantonese vocabulary and grammar, but also to deepen learners’ knowledge about Hong Kong’s culture and school life. The system utilizes a conversational AI “Convai,” which can recognize learners’ pronunciation and provide natural, context appropriate conversation practice. We originally provide a katakana based notation and pitch diagrams for representing Cantonese pronunciation. The evaluation experiments conducted with participants who had no prior experience learning Cantonese suggested that the proposed system is effective for Cantonese learning and contributes to increased learners’ motivation. |
