Estimating positioning at the moment of hitting based on defensive movements based on baseball video analysis

This study proposes a method for automatically estimating the initial defensive positions at the moment of a batter’s swing using baseball game video. The coordinates of defensive players are obtained through object detection with YOLOv8, and their initial positions are reconstructed retrospectively using a linear motion model. In an empirical experiment using Major League Baseball footage, the estimated positions were consistent with actual defensive movements, demonstrating that the effectiveness of defensive shifts can be quantitatively evaluated from video data. This research contributes to the automation of tactical analysis and the application of data-driven approaches in baseball. |
