Comparison of Viewer Emotions Estimated from Film Screenplay Dialogue and Emotions Experienced During Viewing

In film production, screenplays function as essential materials for determining whether a project proceeds to adaptation. However, quantitative methods for predicting viewers’ emotional responses from screenplays remain underdeveloped. This study compares emotion values estimated from screenplay dialogue using natural language processing with emotion values collected in real time from viewers during film viewing. A measurement system using handheld devices was developed, and sentiment analysis was conducted using three BERT-based models. The results show that a review-trained model strongly correlates with non-empathetic viewers’ responses, while divergences between viewer stances were observed in specific scenes. These findings suggest the potential of screenplay-based emotion analysis to support data-informed decision making in film planning and production. |
