Digital Archiving of Insect Specimens using 3D Gaussian Splatting with an Orbital Camera Motion Device

To archive insect specimens with diverse textures in digital format, this study proposes a method that integrates an orbital camera motion device with three-dimensional Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). Unlike conventional methods, which rotate specimens to photograph them from a fixed camera, we propose to use a device that moves the camera along a circular path centered on a fixed specimen. Using this device, we capture multi-view images and reconstruct a 3D scene using 3DGS. To illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method, we reconstructed 3DGS models of multiple specimens. The results demonstrated that the proposed method can generate accurate rendered images for novel viewpoints and successfully reproduce the complicated appearance of the specimens. |
