Design Method for Viewpoint-Dependent Shadow Billboards in Cell Animation

This paper proposes a method for designing artistic shadows that do not correspond to the shape of three-dimensional characters (or objects) on 3D spaces. In general, since shadow effects are computed using the geometric rules between 3D models and lights, shadow algorithms are incompatible with artistic representations. Hence, we focus on classical two-dimensional (2D) billboard techniques used in the game industries, and generate their shadow effects using standard shadowing systems while deforming their shapes according to the light position. Our method is simple enough to implement in existing 2D/3D animation authoring tools. Several examples demonstrate the robustness of our method over previous methods. |
