3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) enables real-time rendering but suffers from projection artifacts. EVER, a raytracing-based method, addresses these issues with physically accurate volumetric rendering but lacks speed. This study aims to accelerate EVER by introducing polyhedral proxy geometries, such as stretched icosahedrons, as bounding volumes instead of
Axis-Aligned Bounding Boxes (AABBs). We implemented the proposed method using NVIDIA OptiX. While the rendering speeds decreased slightly compared to the baseline, experimental results on the Mip-NeRF360 dataset showed improvements in image quality metrics like SSIM and LPIPS. We conclude that the increased BVH traversal cost due to mesh complexity outweighed the benefits of reduced false-positive intersections. |
