Supporting Phase Structure Using Character Deaths for Plot Writing

This study focuses on how a character’s death functions as a catalyst for change that drives narrative progression, and defines the functions of a character’s death in two dimensions: its impact on the protagonist/story and the impression it gives to viewers. From an analysis of existing films, we extracted four impact types, five impression types, and the required amount of death build-up, and organized these findings into an Excel file so that writers can search for and reference relevant cases during plot writing. The experiment showed that using this Excel file made it easier to create the necessary death build-up, demonstrating the usefulness of type-based support. Furthermore, we confirmed that writers can design a character’s death with greater persuasiveness and narrative plausibility by using existing cases as cues. |
