Two-layer aerial image display using spatial multiplexing

We previously proposed a two-layer aerial image display which consists of a light source array with polarizers, a polarization beam splitter, a retro-reflector, and a quarter-wave plate. By changing the rotation angles of the polarizers, it can be switched between a front display, rear display, and DFD display. In this study, we propose a simultaneous two-layer image generation technique employing the time-multiplexing technique. The polarizers are arranged in a checkerboard pattern with their polarization axes rotated 90 degrees each other. Front and rear images can be displayed simultaneously across the entire display surface. We constructed an experimental system using an LED matrix panel and verified the effectiveness of the proposed technique. |
