Personalized Viewing in Broadcasting Enabled by Multilayer Coding

In March 2025, Japan’s advanced terrestrial broadcasting standard approved by ARIB adopted VVC including multilayer coding. This paper proposes an automatic layer-selection scheme for VVC-based content layering to reduce the burden of manual selection of supplementary content (e.g., sign-language video and multilingual subtitles). We multiplex “video attributes” into the transmitted stream and match them with receiver-side preference information to automatically select and display the layer that maximizes a compatibility score. We also demonstrate that, when transmitting a pre-encoded multilayer bitstream via CMAF over MMT, the displayed video can switch automatically in real time according to receiver preferences. |
