A Study on Segment Search Infrastructure for Retrieving Broadcast Content with Dynamic Granularity

This paper proposes a segment search infrastructure that enables retrieval of broadcast content at arbitrary temporal segments according to user’s search intent, independent of predefined units such as programs or segments. The proposed method constructs an index by vectorizing text from complementarily integrated subtitles and speech recognition transcripts within time windows, and extracts candidate segments through vector search with LLM-based query expansion. For segment refinement to identify optimal start and end points, we propose and compare two approaches: Cross-Encoder reranking and LLM-based segment inference. User evaluation showed that LLM outperformed Cross-Encoder in matching search intent, while Cross-Encoder achieved 9.7x faster processing. |
