The relationship between vision and circadian rhythms has been extensively studied, but processing of visible light has been thought to begin in the visual cortex, with the “retina being a simple passive sensor.” In contrast, our hypothesis posits that “the retina is a sophisticated active sensor,” where the SCN (suprachiasmatic nucleus) actively controls the day-night gradation processing occurring within the retina as a first step. To test this hypothesis, it is necessary to reproduce the output image of the first stage (NVP) through image processing. Therefore, we try to extend the hypothesis from daylight vision to twilight vision. The core of the verification procedure is to focus on the observation of printed images during the daytime. Because it is a “reflected image,” it suggests that in twilight scenes observed in “surface color mode” during the day, the “emitting light source” can be perceived naturally. It was demonstrated that images with a highly compressed contrast ratio of approximately 30:1 retain significantly higher naturalness than conventional SDR printed images. |
