Building a Fanbase with Local Characters

This study conducted a comparative analysis of national IP characters and regional characters to clarify the appropriate use of characters in regional tourism. It established that characters, through their narrative and personality traits, stimulate tourism and consumption behaviors and influence the formation of memories of tourism experiences.
Case studies revealed that while nationally recognized IP characters demonstrate high effectiveness in attracting visitors and stimulating consumption, they face the challenge of making tourism memories less likely to be attributed to the local area. In contrast, locally created characters and initiatives grounded in regional culture, though lacking immediate impact, showed high potential to contribute to understanding and fostering affection for the region.
Therefore, for Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, it is suggested that a strategy linking national IP as an “entry point” for visits with locally unique resources and characters, such as Kinosaki Onsen and the stork, is effective for anchoring tourism experience memories within the region. It is concluded that a perspective of using national IP and local characters complementarily leads to sustainable tourism promotion. |
