This study investigates pitcher presentation methods in VR-based baseball batting training systems. In existing commercial systems, a billboard-based approach—where recorded pitcher videos are displayed on a planar surface—is widely adopted. However, this method presents issues such as visual inconsistency caused by residual backgrounds and the absence of motion parallax. To address these problems, we implemented and compared two alternative methods: (1) a Background Removal Condition that isolates the pitcher using video segmentation, and (2) a 3D Avatar Condition that reconstructs the pitcher as a virtual avatar using monocular 3D pose estimation. A subjective evaluation experiment was conducted with nine participants, including experienced and novice players. The results indicated that the Background Removal Condition tended to achieve higher ratings in visual consistency and overall evaluation. Although the 3D Avatar Condition successfully introduced motion parallax, limitations in the geometric accuracy of monocular 3D pose estimation negatively affected the evaluations, particularly among experienced players. These findings suggest that, under the current technical constraints, organizing visual information through high-precision segmentation may be more effective than imperfect 3D reconstruction in practical VR batting systems. |
