A Subjective Evaluation of Appearance in Images with Pseudo-random pixel placement

While advances in imaging systems have led to higher-resolution displays, achieving both high resolution and high-quality image display remains a challenge. As a solution, “pseudo-random pixel arrangement”—a technique that reduces jaggies by pseudo-randomly arranging the effective areas within pixels—has been proposed. In this study, to clarify the impact of this method on the subjective “beauty” of images, we conducted a subjective evaluation experiment using images with manipulated aperture ratio, displacement ratio, and luminance. Analysis using 10 evaluation terms confirmed that the displacement ratio significantly influenced many of the terms. In particular, for “smooth” and “pleasant,” ratings decreased as the displacement ratio increased. On the other hand, for some evaluation terms, such as “fantastical,” the influence of multiple factors was suggested. Based on the above, it was demonstrated that the “beauty” of an image is a multifaceted concept resulting from the combination of multiple parameters. |
