In this paper, we evaluate the effect of differential order in an ambulance siren detection system using zero-crossing rate (ZCR) and differential preprocessing. In the proposed system, siren-sound candidates are first detected by a simple low-power process, and then a more reliable siren-sound decision process is performed. The ZCR calculation can be implemented in an integrated circuit by counting sign changes between each input sample and the previous sample. An ambulance siren consists of alternating tones at 960Hz and 770Hz. Therefore, the ZCR corresponding to these frequencies can be used to trigger a reliable siren-sound decision process. However, the presence of low-frequency components makes it difficult to detect the ZCR associated with the siren frequencies. To address this issue, we apply differentiation as a preprocessing step, which functions as a high-pass filter and can also be implemented in an integrated circuit. The experimental results show that first-order differential preprocessing is the most effective for the evaluated data and that the proposed candidate-detection approach is feasible for low-power integrated circuit implementation. |
