The effect of underwater presentation on visual perception -- Relationship between visual and psychophysical factors of AIRR images in water and air --

(in English) Aerial imaging by retro-reflection (hereafter referred to as AIRR) developed by Yamamoto et al. can be imaged in the air by using three elements: light source, retroreflector, and half mirror.

On the other hand, in the underwater presentation of an AIRR image called an underwater display, it is not yet clear how much visual impact it will have, so it is necessary to examine it for practical use.
Therefore, in this study, we will examine the correlation between optical properties and visual impressions by focusing on the difference in appearance in the air and water according to AIRR images.
Specific examination methods are experiments on sensitivity evaluation in which AIRR images of natural images are presented in the air and water, and physical measurement of image brightness and color distribution in each environment.

In this experiment, the effect of the presence or absence of a water tank on the sensitivity evaluation is verified by performing a relative evaluation of the appearance of an AIRR image presented in water based on 22 natural images presented in the air.
In the dark room, after dark adaptation, the subject alternately observes and evaluates the aerial and underwater AIRR images for relative evaluation.
Seven evaluation terms were used, and the evaluation scale was set to five-stage evaluation (-2-2).
In addition, 18 men and women in their 20s were tested, and the visual distance of the present stimulus was 42 cm considering the size of the tank.
In addition, a two-dimensional color luminance meter CA-2500 (made by Comicaminolta) was used for physical measurement to measure the color distribution and brightness of 22 presented stimulating images in the air and water.
The observation distance was 42 cm, the same visual distance as the sensitivity evaluation experiment.

From the experimental results, certain evaluation words such as "dark," "three-dimensional," and "fantastic" were identified as superior evaluation trends in all images.
Physical measurements confirmed changes in average brightness and color distribution due to the influence of water.
Furthermore, the relationship between psychophysical factors suggests that changes in the way AIRR images are viewed in the air and underwater may be determined by the interaction of the content such as the color and composition of the image and the physical hue change.
