A Study on Robust Extraction of Palmprint Regions of Interest Independent of Hand Position and Posture

In contactless palmprint authentication, the region of interest (ROI) in the center of the palm is extracted from an image of the entire hand captured by a camera, and individual verification is performed based on the features of that region. ROI extraction is a critical preprocessing step that determines authentication accuracy; any positional misalignment during extraction can cause a significant decline in authentication performance. Conventional ROI extraction methods rely on contour extraction via binarization or valley point detection based on distance from the wrist; consequently, they are susceptible to background noise and changes in hand pose, making it difficult to reliably detect valley points. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a hand ROI extraction method robust to hand position and orientation by combining high-resolution hand region extraction using Segment Anything Model 3 (SAM 3), position- and pose-invariant wrist point setting using MediaPipe Hand Landmarker (MP), and valley point location estimation that integrates keypoint and edge information. Evaluation experiments using public datasets demonstrate that the proposed method achieves accurate ROI extraction under diverse shooting conditions and improves palmprint authentication accuracy compared to conventional methods. |
