Whistle pitch corresponds to the resonant frequency of the vocal tract. Similar to wind instruments like the flute, pitch can change discontinuously via resonant-mode transitions (known as “register switching” in whistling) without substantially modifying the shape of the resonant cavity. Actively using these register transitions facilitates the production of high-pitch sounds and expands the whistling range beyond three octaves, as in professional whistling. Furthermore, register switching supports advanced performance techniques, including warbling, which is characterized by rapid transitions, and double-note production, which involves generating two notes simultaneously. This study demonstrated these findings using a vocal tract model reconstructed by performing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the vocal tract during whistling. |
