Fast Calculation of Animated Computer-Generated Holograms Using Sequentially truncated-HOSVD Based Tensor Compression

Ray–wavefront conversion-based computer-generated hologram (CGH) enables to display a high-quality 3D image, and applying to the animated CGH is expected. However, since the method requires two-dimensional fast Fourier transforms (FFT2) for every viewpoint and frame, the larger they are, the much higher the computational cost is. This paper proposes a fast animated CGH calculation method based on Sequentially Truncated Higher-Order Singular Value Decomposition (ST-HOSVD). The proposed method handles multi-view and multi-frame orthographic images as a fourth-order tensor with vertical and horizontal view-angle modes, one temporal mode, and one vectorized image mode. Basis images are extracted using ST-HOSVD, which performs sequentially truncated SVDs in the first three modes to reduce the tensor dimensionality and computational overhead, followed by matrix decomposition in the fourth mode. As a result, the method requires FFT2 operations only for the basis images, significantly reducing the overall computational cost, while maintaining a low computational overhead for SVD. In a simulation, we demonstrated that the proposed method can reduce computational time while maintaining hologram reconstruction performance. |
