Construction and Evaluation of a Synthetic Dataset for Smoke-Like Non-Uniform Haze Removal

Images captured in outdoor environments often suffer from reduced visibility because of haze caused by fog and smoke. Therefore, haze removal is important for image recognition and sensing systems. Although many deep learning-based dehazing methods and training datasets have been proposed, most existing datasets assume spatially uniform haze. Datasets representing non-uniform haze with locally varying concentration and distribution remain limited. This study proposes an automatic construction method for a non-uniform haze dataset using a three-dimensional virtual environment. Spatially varying haze is generated through particle simulation, and pixel-aligned hazy and ground-truth images are obtained by synchronously rendering the same scene under different conditions. The proposed dataset also provides depth maps, semantic labels, and spatial distribution of haze. In the experiments, we present the evaluation results of two dehazing models with different designs using the constructed dataset. |
