A motion detection model using monocular camera images inspired by the neuronal propagation in the hippocampus and its application to obstacle detection

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Motion detection and collision warning are essential issues in advanced driver assistance systems. We have already proposed a motion detection model using edge images extracted from monocular camera sequences. This model is inspired by the neuronal propagation in the hippocampus in the brain, and can detect motion of edges in high speed and low cost without image matching. The proposed model divides the edge image into lattice-shaped 2D maps, and detects motion of edges on these maps by measuring the time that an edge takes to travel from a lattice to a neighboring one. However, this previously proposed model is difficult to apply in complicated traffic scenes because the detection accuracy is insufficient. In this paper, we propose an improved model by introducing elements with gating function, and demonstrate its application to obstacle detection.
