Range image registration based on adaptive surface approximation

(in English) This paper proposes a method for simplification of 3D shapes based on
spatial approximation using sets of spheres whose radii are discretely different. The sets of spheres with different discrete radii enable us to generate a hierarchical expression easily and to reduce computational costs. Experimental results show that our representation of range data is stable for various 3D models. The proposed model representation is applied to the hierarchical registration by ICP algorithm. The results show that the hierarchical representation is very effective for model registration and matching and its computational cost much lower than that of using the original 3D model.
