Many physiological researches have utilized the reverse correlation technique to probe receptive field structures of neurons in early visual cortex. Recently, this technique is also employed in psychophysical researches. Psychophysical reverse correlation aims at exploring a whole brain mechanism for an observer's judgment, while physiological experiments investigate a linear property of a single neuron as a filter. A brain mechanism for an observer's judgment should be made up of many neurons interacted each other and would be a complex nonlinear system. Therefore, the psychophysical reverse correlation requires an analytical method considering the system's nonlinearity. Here, we formulate a method for probing the nonlinearities of brain mechanisms with the psychophysical reverse correlation and show a result of a numerical experiment simulating a motion detection experiment. |
