Auditory stimulus induced visual size illusion
Yasuhiro Takeshima, Jiro Gyoba (Tohoku Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Many studies have been conducted on visual size illusion. However, possible auditory effects have not been examined yet. The previous study indicated that the difference of length could be perceived even by auditory modality. So, we assume that adding auditory stimuli to visual stimuli could alter their size perception. The results indicated that adding loud auditory stimulus made perceived size larger. Moreover, we found that this effect occurred more strongly in peripheral vision where the reliably of visual information was low. These results suggest that auditory information can modulate visual size perception and its effectiveness becomes larger in peripheral vision.
