[Invited Talk] The effects of additional stimulus modulation on visually induced self-motion perception

(in English) Uniform motion of a visual stimulus which occupies larger area of observer’s visual field can induce illusory perception of self-motion in the direction opposite to the visual motion. This perceptual phenomenon is called visually induced self-motion perception (or veciton), and has been investigated as a strong evidence which indicates that visual information can strongly affect self-orientation. The current research was aimed to investigate the effects of coherent modulations of additional stimulus attributes which has been ignored by the vection studies. Three psychophysical experiments revealed that coherent stimulus oscillation enhances self-motion perception, whereas coherent modulation of the stimulus color inhibits vection. Rigidity perception of the stimulus pattern can explain the former, and perceived modulation of illumination would be responsible for the latter.
