Influence of vection stimuli on the driver's speed sensation

In this study we investigated how much the driver's speed sensation increased when the driver perceived vection induced by the stimuli placed along the road. We used computer simulated movies as stimuli which consisted of poles flickering. In experiments, size of poles, interval of setting poles and driving situation were used as the experimental variables. Observers compared a driving scene with vection stimuli with another driving scene with no vection stimuli, and chose the driving scene that produced higher speed sensation. The results showed that vection stimuli could increase consistently driver's speed sensation regardless of the size and the interval of poles and various driving situations. |
