We have started a basic study on a bi-directional transmission system to develop the new microwave band Field Pick-up Unit (FPU) that can efficiently transmit file-based videos. The major bi-directional transmission systems are based on Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) or Time Division Duplex (TDD). TDD has an advantage of the flexibility in choosing uplink-to-downlink data rate ratios without changing the current channel allocation.
We have developed a basic experimental equipment, which can emulate the Media Access Control (MAC) layer with Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ), to evaluate throughput performance of the TDD-based FPU. Throughput performance was confirmed to be improved even under the condition that the distance between both ends was 100 km, if the TDD frame size were more than 20 ms. Furthermore, throughput performance was confirmed to degrade significantly when the high uplink-to-downlink time ratio were selected because of the latency due to ARQ at the MAC layer. |
