A note on accurate deer detection from road images using movement direction

(in English) Deer-vehicle collisions are becoming a serious problem world wide. In order to save the effort of manually mon-
itoring videos and establishing new far-infrared cameras, an automatic deer detection method from images taken by existing
visible light cameras is necessary. In this paper, we propose an accurate deer detection method using movement direction.
The proposed method consists of two steps: In the first step, we extract moving objects from road images using background
subtraction and then match them with deer contour templates to detect deer candidates. For this step, we create deer contour templates in several directions by using 3-D model, which does not require to manually collect a lot of deer image samples. In the second step, we estimate movement direction for each of the deer candidates by tracking it in an image sequence. Using the estimated movement direction, we verify each of the deer candidates, removing false positives and improving the performance of deer detection. Results of experiments conducted using road image sequences show the effectiveness of the proposed method and suggest possible directions of our future works.
