Inter coding with adaptive DCT and DST

(in English) In the case of coding natural image signal which has higher correlation between the neighboring pixels, Discrete Cosine Transform has been adopted as a similar approach to Karhunen Loéve Transform. Therefore, DCT is incorporated into video coding standards, e.g. MPEG-1, MPEG-2, AVC/H.264 and so on. However, the input signal of transformation process is a prediction residue with video coding methods, such as AVC/H.264 and HEVC which is currently under consideration for standardization. These coding methods employ high accuracy signal prediction methods for prediction signal. With such predicted signal, the pixel correlation has been reduced much. The residue, which is the input signal of transformation signal, has the different signal characteristics from the natural image signal, therefore, DCT does not perform well against it. On the other hand, DST is known for its ability to encode such signal effectively. We propose the new inter coding method with DCT and DST. The method applies either DCT or DST to residue signal and improves the coding performance. In this paper, we report the implementation and its coding performance.
