An Equalizer using Piecewise Linear Function for Holographic Data Storage

(in English) A holographic data storage has advantages of large capacity as well as high data-transfer-rate because it records or reproduces a two-dimensional data array, which is called a data page, at one light irradiation. During readout, the data page is reproduced by irradiation of light and diffraction in a holographic medium, and is captured by an image sensor. When processing symbol extraction after capturing the data page, the size and position of a symbol in the reproduced data page does not always correspond to the size and position of a pixel in the image sensor. The symbol extraction consequently requires an interpolation including the nearest neighbor, bi-linear, and bi-cubic, which have been generally used for the typical graphics processing. Although the performance of the bi-cubic interpolation is high, the implementation of the bi-cubic in a hardware such as FPGA (field programmable gate array) is subject to cause a lack of multiplier in FPGA resource and to limit the number of parallelization because the bi-cubic requires a heavy use of power of variables. In this paper, we propose an interpolator using a piecewise linear function that approximates bi-cubic function, and present the experimental characteristics of a multistage equalizer that involves a FIR (finite impulse response) filter and the piecewise linear function interpolator.
